I always had to call US numbers. It was crazy that I had to top up my Skype credits to call folks, which is what led me to look for viable Skype alternatives.

OpenPhone was there to help.

If you’re in the market for a VoIP service for your business, you’ve probably heard about OpenPhone. I was not only an early customer of the service (way back in 2018) but also someone who tried starting a competitive app in Germany. So safe to say, I know my fair share about the industry to warrant an honest and in-depth OpenPhone review. 

If you’re interested in OpenPhone and want to know if it’s worth your while, you’ve come to the right place. I have personally bought and tried OpenPhone, so you don’t have to! OpenPhone is ideal for individuals and teams, with robust calling, texting, and a lightweight CRM. It functions similarly to an inbox in that it allows you to share a phone number with teammates. 

Available for the browser and as an iOS and Android app, OpenPhone offers additional features such as Automated Attendant, Call Logging and Recording, IVR /Voice Recognition, Call Routing, PBX, and more. 

You can seamlessly record or push live calls to your teammates, keep track of team performance with the analytics tools, and communicate with multiple people at a time within the same dashboard. And the best part is, you don’t need any special hardware either. You can access OpenPhone anywhere, with a decent internet connection.

Besides seamlessly adding work numbers to your existing devices, OpenPhone also offers a host of integrations, such as HubSpot, Zapier, Slack, CRM software, Google Contacts, and very soon with the likes of Pipedrive and Salesforce too.

Just like the service itself, OpenPhone pricing is simple and efficient. Besides the option for a free trial, OpenPhone comes in three packages– Standard, Premium, and Enterprise.

  • Standard Plan: With an annual subscription, the Standard Plan costs $10 per month for each user billed annually (up to $13 per user if billed monthly). It includes one new local or toll-free phone number (for each user), auto-attendant, call recording, and calling and messaging to US and Canadian numbers.
  • Premium Plan: Billed annually, the Premium Plan costs $20 per user per month ($25/user per month for a monthly subscription). The Premium Plan adds to the offerings of the Standard Plan with additional features like call transfers, group calling, advanced IVR, analytics, reporting, and priority support services.
  • Enterprise Plan: If none of the previous plans fit your bill, you can also get a subscription customized for your business by contacting the OpenPhone team.

OpenPhone is best for tech-based SMBs. Moreover, it works great for individuals, teams, and companies of all sizes.

So it can be an excellent phone service for your startup, small business, or team at any large organization.

OpenPhone Review: 3 Things I Liked About OpenPhone

There’s hardly anything not to love about OpenPhone– it’s cheap, simple, and super helpful for any business of any size. But if I had to pick the three things I liked most, they would be:

  • UX: As I’ve said so repeatedly throughout this article, OpenPhone is simple. Though packed with tools and features, the dashboard is easy to navigate, even if you’re a beginner. Switching between team members, team chats, and customer chat is as simple as switching tabs. Calling, recording, and enabling auto-recording functions are over in a click. You can also use the handy search bar to quickly find out what you’re looking for through a pile of customer messages. Besides the dashboard, the customer support for OpenPhone is also fast and very helpful, accessible via live chat and email. The team also offers live demos, Q&As, tutorials, and more to make your OpenPhone journey even more straightforward. After using multiple similar services like Aircell and Cloudtalk, I can safely say that if you had the notion that business phone services are supposed to be complex and rigid, then OpenPhone will make you think twice.
  • Team Collaboration: Another thing I love about OpenPhone is its collaborative nature. From leaving comments and tags for your teammates to follow up on, OpenPhone lets you stay in sync with your teammates with direct messaging, send status updates to the team (e.g., commuting or working from home), and see who’s active and who’s away at any given time. The shared inbox allows multiple people to call and text from a single phone number, besides having full visibility into who’s on what call and who sent what message. With OpenPhone, your team can also place calls from the same shared number simultaneously.
  • Cost Efficiency: If anything, your wallet surely will love the cost-effectiveness of OpenPhone. Starting from just $10 a month for a user, OpenPhone is cheaper than many other VoIP business phone services and standard SIMs. And the best part is, for just those ten bucks a month, you’re getting a phone service, a team collaboration platform, and a lightweight CRM– all rolled into one.

While I can go on and on about the stuff I love about OpenPhone, I still wish it didn’t lack a few features, like automatic call distribution, call center management, voicemail transcription, or call screening. But overall, considering the price tag, OpenPhone is still a pretty good deal for some pretty good features.

Final Verdict 

I adore OpenPhone, as well as the people that created it. After meeting the owner and using the service firsthand, I believe it is one of the greatest business phone services available. It includes strong calling, messaging, analytics, collaboration, and productivity features, on top of a lightweight CRM to provide your company with all-around phone assistance.

So if you want to make unlimited calls, collaborate seamlessly, and keep track of all your team members but not pay as much as you would with a standard SIM, OpenPhone gives you all of that from anywhere in the world on the device of your choosing. But before bringing out your wallet, I’d highly suggest going for the free trial at first to get a taste of OpenPhone.
