HomeMeal.de Review: Is It Authentic? (My First-Hand Experience With HomeMeal)

homemeal review

Have you ever craved authentic Indian or Pakistani food in Germany, only to be met with versions so adapted to Germans that barely resemble the original?

That’s been my struggle.

Every restaurant I tried seemed to tone down the spices, making the food more palatable to German tastes and leaving me missing the flavors of home.

Enter HomeMeal.de, a service I stumbled upon while searching for a solution. HomeMeal.de promises to deliver authentic, homemade meals from various cuisines right to your doorstep. Anywhere in Germany.

HomeMeal.de’s promise is not just about delivering food. It’s about homemade meals that hit you with the first bite of a perfectly spiced curry or a fragrant biryani. And for someone far from home, this promise is invaluable.

Finding time to cook ‘Desi’ meals is a luxury many of us can’t afford. HomeMeal.deseems to understand this, offering a service that could save me both time and the disappointment of another ‘Germanized’ Indian or Pakistani dish.

Homemeal review

So a while back, I decided to try HomeMeal, eager to see if it could live up to its claims. Can I bring the authentic tastes of Indian and Pakistani kitchens to my dining table in Germany?

Oh btw, I am an expat living in Munich for the last 10 years. And I also have a small newsletter for expats in Munich.

This review will dive deep into my experience with HomeMeal, exploring their service’s variety, authenticity, and convenience.

Again, full transparency: I may receive commissions if you click on some of the links in this article, but it won’t cost you a thing! Also, the companies do not pay me to write these reviews. I test the products and services myself, and I support them regardless.

Pros:

  • Authentic Flavors: Delivers genuine tastes from Indian, Pakistani, and other Asian and Arabic cuisines, offering a true home-cooked experience.
  • Variety of Options: A wide range of meals to choose from, ensuring that there’s always something new to try. To fit your mood.
  • Convenience: Meals are delivered directly to your door, saving time on cooking and cleaning. Not just in Munich—Anywhere in Germany.
  • Halal and Dietary Varieties: Offers Halal, dairy-free, nut-free, and gluten-free options, catering to various dietary needs.
  • Saves Money: More cost-effective than eating out at restaurants, with meals costing less on average.
  • Chef Diversity: Access to multiple chefs, each bringing their unique style and specialities, (It’s like an Airbnb for food).
  • Select Your Chef: Ability to select meals based on chef preference, allowing for personalized taste experiences.
  • Trial of New Dishes: Offers dishes that are hard to find in Munich, providing an opportunity to explore new cuisines.

Cons:

  • Minimum Order Requirement: Initially required to order a minimum of 3 or 6 meals, which may be inconvenient for some users (though there are plans to reduce this).
  • Variability in Chef Quality: Not all chefs may match every customer’s taste preferences, sometimes leading to inconsistency in meal satisfaction.
  • More Focus on Indian, Pakistani and Asian Cuisines: While offering a variety of dishes, the focus is mainly on Indian, Pakistani and Asian foods, which may not appeal to everyone seeking broader cuisines.
  • Taste Subjectivity: As with any restaurant or food service, personal taste can vary, and not every meal may be a hit for each individual.

Although there are a few drawbacks of HomeMeal, it is clear that they are having some really good benefits. Especially when it comes to Indian and Pakistani foods.

Things I Love About HomeMeal.de

There’s a lot to say about why I love HomeMeal… But here are a few things that stand out for me…

First, the food tastes like it’s from back home. When I take a bite, it’s like being at my family’s table again. The flavors are spot-on, rich, and full of those spices that remind me of home. It’s not the usual stuff that’s been changed to fit what local people here are used to. It’s the real deal.

They’ve got a huge menu. One day I’m having a curry that takes me back to the streets of Pakistan, and the next, I’m trying a dish from somewhere in India. They’ve got dishes from all over. I particularly love some of the Asian cuisines they have and I love trying new ones once in a while.

For someone like me, always overloaded with work, the fact that I don’t have to cook is a big plus. If I have to cook ‘desi’ food, if I add up the time that goes into it—takes me like 2 hours. And the fuss around it.

With HomeMeal, I just heat up what they send, and I’m good to go. No pots and pans to clean, no groceries to buy. It saves me so much time and hassle.

Now, I’m lactose intolerant and this adds another layer of trouble when eating out or ordering in. But HomeMeal gets it. They have options that work for me, and I don’t have to worry about ending up with something I can’t eat. It’s a relief not having to be on guard all the time.

The chefs make a big difference. Each one has their style, so it’s like eating at a new place every time I order. This keeps things interesting. It’s not just the same old food every time.

Along with this, discovering new chefs and their style of cooking has been fun. Especially Asian and Arabic food. There are things I’ve tried with HomeMeal that I wouldn’t have otherwise. And I’ve found some new favorites this way.

So, yeah, HomeMeal has made a big difference for me. It’s not just about getting food delivered. It’s about getting food that feels like home, that fits my life and my needs. And it’s opened up a whole new world of flavors for me, all without having to cook or clean up a mess afterwards.
